生成彫刻  [彫刻+AR]

～Generated Sculpture～　

 

昔、お米を作っていたおばあちゃんに、

「お米一粒には7つの神さまがいるから、ちゃんと残さず食べてね。」

と言われた事がある。

 

なんで、そんなモノに神がいるのか。

モノに神や魂が宿ること、

それは昔から存在する、拡張現実

(AR) 的な想像の世界にも思える。

 

伊勢物語にも登場する「付喪神 (つくもがみ) 」は、長い年月を経てモノや自然に神が宿る神様である。

 

コロナ渦で家に居る時間が長くなり、

四角いデジタル機器を介して、SNSなどの四角いグリッドに人間やモノ、情報も瞬間的に凝縮された日常を味わう時間が長くなってしまった。

平穏に戻れば、この日常の記憶も忘れられるかもしれない。

そんな今日のモノや情報で凝縮された生活から、溢れ出たモノや記憶の残像を、付喪神の世界に見立てて表現。

全てのモノは長い年月を経て、付喪神のように戻ってくるのかもしれない。

 

この四角く区切られた「電脳世界 (サイバースペース) 」のような田んぼの一角には、

実際にある彫刻を、スマートフォンのカメラ越しに見ることで、AR (Augmented Reality) フィルターのオブジェクトと融合し、デジタルによって生成する彫刻が完成する。

 

隠れる顔にトラッキングをしながら、顔を探していくことで、個人または大切な人と一緒に、記憶と想像のトラッキングをしてほしい。

In Japanese folklore, “tsukumogami” are ordinary tools possessed by a spirit, most often foxes or raccoons. For this exhibition, I sought to explore how tsukumogami could appear in the modern world, where people were stuck at home due to the pandemic, always on their phones and ordering an unprecedented amount of stuff for home delivery.

Within the grid-like rice fields, my installation featured 4 sculptures:

(1)    Boy and girl napping.  This sculpture intended to spark imagination and prepare visitors for the other, more abstract sculptures.

(2)    “Kitsune”. Foxes in Japanese folklore are shapeshifters where the number of tails represents their wisdom.

(3)    “Daruma” doll. Traditionally viewed as a symbol of good luck, daruma dolls can be found in old homes and shops, now often gathering dust in a corner.

(4)    Gym rack. During quarantine, it was popular to order home exercise equipment but many of those tools have now been repurposed for other uses (e.g., drying rack) or stuck in storage.

The abstract nature of the sculptures is intentional so that when the AR filters are applied the image is fully generated. That's my meaning of “generated sculpture”.
