CHAKKY KATO
“NOH-Noize”
Intervention Performance
Kyoto, Japan
2019
This performance was my modern interpretation of “noh,” the classical Japanese dance-drama artform. Typically, noh is narrated theater where emotions are conveyed through stylized gestures and characters are distinguished by the masks worn by the actors. My interpretation seized upon a sub-genre of noh, “zatsu-noh,” in which the characters cannot be easily defined, such as madness, obsession, vengeful spirits, and humanity. The primary performer used modern dance as her means of movement and instead of theatrically reciting her tale, her movements were captured by floor microphones underneath a layer of sandpaper. While the performance itself took place in a traditional temple and noh stage, the changes to the subject, movement, and sounds challenged the audience to rethink their preconceptions of noh.
